Good thinking! I never dare read a book club book too early or will have even less to say about it on the day!! Pre/sequels are the way to go!

I am not sure about ritual re-reading, although Christmas/ holiday traditions often take this shape. I do think reading something you read in a completely different phase of your life can change the way you remember it. Especially if you read a childhood favorite to one of your children.
Another good reason to re-read is to refresh your memory when a sequel / prequel or similar story comes out. For example, I had to re-read Oryx & Crake when The Year of the Flood appeared; Middlesex after reading Annabel.
As for a suggestion, since you plan to read Prisoner of Heaven for September (reminder!) and I will be reading for the first time Shadow of the Wind and Angel's Game (currently on request through inter-library loan) perhaps you could re-read those two before starting number three! Could make the discussion more lively, even if it does not take place in your local stumbling block!
